Why is the Social Security Administration overwhelmed by questionable claims?
One of the primary reasons is that many long term disability insurance companies require the potential beneficiary to apply for Social Security Disability before paying long term insurance disability benefits or within a certain period of time after they commence payments under the long term disability policy.
It is estimated that approximately 2.5 million applications are filed with the Social Security Administration for that purpose. This practice increases the Insurance companies profits by decreasing the claims reserves and/or refusing to pay benefits under the long term disability policy altogether. Most importantly, many insurance policies allow long term benefit payments to be reduced by the amount Social Security pays out or from other sources such as Workers' Compensation benefits and Personal Injury compensation.
